Councilwoman Mendez Votes “No” on Council Pedicab Bill

The Councilwoman stood in solidarity with the New York City Pedicab Owners Association, the League of Humane Voters, Transportation Alternatives, and the New York City Bicycle Coalition by voting no on Intro 331. The bill, which passed on Feb 28 with a 38-7 vote and 4 abstentions, will ban electric-assist pedicabs and put a cap on the number of cabs in operation.
Although she supports the regulation of the pedicab industry and was a cosponsor of an earlier pedicab regulation bill, the Councilwoman feels Intro 331 will severely threaten this vital industry. “A cap on vehicles that are environmentally friendly, popular with tourists, and a valuable source of employment for students, recent immigrants and actors is a move in the wrong direction for the city.”
