Representatives at a meeting with the Mayors Office, have been informed that the initiative instigated by TFL to license pedicabs as ‘Hackney Carriages’ has now been abandoned due to fears that this is both inappropriate and unworkable.
A new stratagee will be to promote a voluntary registration system, supervised by Westminster and TFL.
Westminster have already commenced a survey of usable pedicab ranks, which will be available to pedicabs that comply with the registration.
A survey of how pedicabs are perceived by the general public as shown growing support for the industry and registration is a step towards allowing compliant pedicab operators to develop, with the same powers to be used to penalise unsafe operators.
