I am launching a new pedicab company in Fort Lauderdale Florida and am having difficulty locating an insurance carier. As I understand it, most other pedicab companies don't operate with insurance coverage because of the diffuculty in finding it... is this true?? If so, what's the best way to protect ourselves from liability issues? Casualties of operators and/or passengers? Any other pedicab companies/drivers out there with some good tips?

Hi

Here in London, the operatores formed LPOA (London Pedicab Operators Association) & have been looking at something like self insurance. For this you would need enough Companys or pedicabs to be able to make a minimum £3m public liability insurance (its like forming your own insurance group).

This will be possible here because nearly 90% of all operators are part of the Association & with about £25000 its also been possible for get your own insurance cindicat (the dudes front the moneys for any claim that my go over the £5000 threash hold minimum claim). Which again may be an option.

I would strongly recomend insurance, as it will improve your (& the pedicab) industry from that big Pedicab killer 'the big claim'. Most transport options will have a few big claims per year & in the states I would think this could at some point shut down business in a few cities & possible even states, if some one is badly hurt & there ain't no one to pay.

London only just managed to survive the prosses of being licenced due to the industry pulling together & making all the right changes.

Good luck

Ps. why not contact Main Street Pedi-cabs, tto see if they can sell you insurance with there Pedicabs. It has been some thing that Maximus have been able to ofer through the LPOA.
