View Full Version : Do Any Drivers Wear A Helmet While Giving Rides?

I usually sit slunched in the back seat waiting for a ride with my helmet hidden. They when I get a fare, I jump to the front and put on my helmet.

Sometimes people ask me if it is safe? Why are you wearing a helmet? I tell them that I am out there all day and night and my low chances of getting into an accident is increased by being out here so much.

Of course I don't want to give my passengers an unsafe image about pedicabs.

No one has ever asked me for a spare helmet for their short ride.

Now I sometimes ride a recumbent cab in an urban environment where traffic is heavy. I always wear my helmet even if it is just around the block. I have flipped some trikes and such screwing around. A few weeks ago I flipped a tadpole recumbent trike over my head and it felt like a mini car accident. Luckily I was wearing a helmet at the time.

A buddy of mine was just hit on a bicycle and it made me think of it a bit more as he wasn't wearing a helmet. He may be seriously hurt too.

Of coarse we all look dorky in a helmet, but what is worse a dumb dork or a dead dork?

Cheers

Anyone else have any views on a helmet?

I do not wear a helmet. Perhaps I should, but the traffic is very very light.

It all depends on the nature of the accident and how you fall. if it is simply a fall, a helmet will help. if a car or truck hits you it is an entirely different story.

My brother-in-law/best friend was wearing a helmet when a stupid pickup truck killed him 10 years ago. 2 tons of stupid metal will always win against muscle and bone.

With that said, when I commute to work every day on my 2-wheeler i always wear a helmet.

As a person using your bike for a profession you should set a good example for other riders (young & old) by wearing a helmet. Not to mention the safety issues involved.

I "should" do a lot of things, many of which I do, some of which I choose to ignore.

When and if the traffic level warrants it, I'll start wearing a helmet.

I have never seen any Velotaxi-driver with helmet and I guess that
it depends of the type of pedicab if you need one or not.

Me thinks that helmets are a good idea IF.... they fit well & if you plan to fall of your bike BUT you realy should not fall off a trike EVER unless you take a corner to hard. If you get hit by a car, then it will very little help.

It does make you hot as hell & sadly does give the impression that your not sure of what you are doing or that what you are doing is NOT save.

Here in the UK if you ride a trike (motor or not) then you are exempt from needing to wear the helmet.

If you read up on cycle helmets & what they are good for, then you will realise that you may be over estimating the protection given :(
