New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) It may be end of road for handpulled rickshaws in Kolkata but they are all set to become popular as vehicle for tourist rides abroad.
Some countries, including the US and Germany, are planning to introduce the hand-pulled rickshaws, says a company in China, which is making upscale hand pulled rickshaws for importing them to New York city for novelty tour rides.
"We are building 19th century traditional rickshaws but use modern day materials such as chrome, mirror finish, stainless steel. They are built in China but are for sale around the world," says Arty Nicholas, CEO, Shanghai Rickshaw LLC (http://www.shanghairickshaw.com/).
Nicholas, in an e-mail reply, says they are used as a tourist ride and seem to be very popular.
Calling them "modern day novelty rides for tourists", the company expects a positive reaction from the tour rides and projected sales across the US.
The rickshaws, apart from being used in the tourism and transport industry, could be utilised for promotion and advertising, as window displays, at stage and film openings and in "Asia influenced projects." PTI
