I imagine a more traditional pedicab would be a hit. Could probably earn your money back in maybe 6 months.

They have seen a need and filled it. Remember that money is not the only unit that is exchanged here. I bet lots of these boaga boaga drivers have never seen or heard of a rickshaw or pedicab. Our business model will not work here with out considering their needs. Could a real 100$ rickshaw work here yes, But 100$ is one third of a years wages.
So the cost is $12,000 for a rickshaw in our world, in comparitive value. The perfect model for the micro loans you hear so much about.
