Default Pedicab with illegal motor catches fire

A burned-out shell was all that remained after an illegal motor stashed under a pedicab driver’s ride burst into flames, leaving the dumbfounded operator with a slew of summonses.
The unidentified driver was making his way up a hill in Central Park with passengers aboard on Aug. 23 when the hidden golf cart-like motor overheated and began smoking, a source said.

If you are going to have an electric motor - do not overcharge your batteries, use a circuit breaker with heat sensor, make sure you have a sprinkler system and get a timer on the plug.

Just another bit of advice - it seems that the batteries burst into flames when they being overcharged in the middle of the night - leave them on a timer and don't use the plastic box chargers that you get from China. Buy a more expensive charger like this one http://www.getlithium.com/21-Lithion...-chargers.html. Make sure it has a cut off sensor!!!!

Also consider putting your batteries in a flame retardant bag like this one and do not charge them all week for the weekend.

I'm new, why is the motor illegal?

While the posted charger is interesting, there are chargers esigned specifically for the type of lithium used in pedicab and eBike builds.
Chargers can extend battery life as well, by charing at lower rates. 80% charge rates can extend a battery life and nearly double it by most accounts.. Grin makes such a charger, the Satiator. http://www.ebikes.ca/product-info/cycle-satiator.html

    All the best!
